These songs were inspired by stories from members of the local community and parents of students who participated in the TECP 2014 program in Echuca. The lyrics were written by the students in response to a number of presentations by local Elders and workshops by Indigenous musicians on particular themes including their connection to country, respect for Elders, the importance of community and what it means to be Aboriginal. The accompanying music was devised by the students with the assistance of talented Indigenous musicians and mentors including Deline Briscoe, Emma Donovan, Lee Morgan and David Leha.

  • Always Home

The Elders they speak to me
    I listen carefully
    Learning and sharing
    Our stories

    We’ve seen the history
and how the past has been
    Feel a change coming
    from within

    All these lands they hold
    All of our past
    We were the first
    We shall be the last

    For this was always home

I sit - begin to think
How my people walked bare feet
    Across our country
    Proud and free

    I hear the wind blowing
    Birds call above the trees
    I know our people
    Are with me

    All these lands they hold
All of our past we know
    We were the first
    We shall be the last

    For this was always home

    We were the first
    We’ve come so far
We’re proud of who we are

    Yes we are the originals
    Such a long, long past
    Learn the culture
    Of this land

  • Brave Souls

    They did things for us
that we don’t have to do
    Today
    They stood strong in fighting
    and did not back down
    Back down

With faith and trust they believed
    in themselves
    With the ancestors behind them
    Old people behind them

    Where would we be today?
    Fighting for our land back
    Fighting for our land back

How have we gotten here today?
    Fighting for our land back
    Fighting for our land back

    Leading us today
    Still with brave souls
    Brave souls

They paved the way for us
Our leaders they took that step
We know they’ve got our back
    Fighting for our land
    Freedom fighters

With faith and trust they believed
    in themselves
    With the ancestors behind them
    Old people behind them

    *Where would we be today?
    Fighting for our land back
    Fighting for our land back

How have we gotten here today?
    Fighting for our land back
    Fighting for our land back

    Leading us today
    Still with brave souls
    Brave souls

    Brave souls (brave souls)
    Brave souls (brave souls)
    Brave souls [Repeat from *]

    (brave souls)

  • Round Round

    Young Koorie boys
    Young Koorie boys

    ** Young Koorie Boy
    Got a lot of problems
    Got my own stories now

    Know that I belong
    With the rest of you
    fellas
    Even though I get in
    trouble

    Still an Aboriginal
    My race, we are original

    I’m of the land
If you’re proud like I am
    Be sure to raise your
    right hand

    I’m black, I’m proud
    This is our land
    Screaming out loud
    Yeah cuz say that again

    I love my culture
    Love my people
    And I told you
    Yeah there ain’t no equal
    Yeah no elder
    But they want our race
    to win

    By getting us to school
    Our mind is a tool
    Thoughts
All we know is that we
    fought
    for our country
    Our land
    Not just something that
    we hold
    in our hand
    Our stories been told
    throughout
    the land

    It’s a privilege to know
    who I am
    I’m black and I’m proud
Put it down to the end

    Round, round

    We been around
    Round, round

    We been around
    Round, Round

    Round, Round
    Round, Round

    We been around
    Round, Round

    We been around
    Yeah been around
    At least for sixty thou

    Round been around
    My peeps are putting it
    down

    Round been around
    My culture keeping it
    proud

    Yeah look around the
    ground is ours

    Round been around
    Round we been around
    [Repeat by 3]

    Yeah been around
    Least for sixty thou

    Round been around
    My peeps are putting it
    down

    Round been around
    My culture keeping me
    proud

    Round
    Look around the ground
    is ours

    Repeat from **

  • Caretakers

We’ve been here on this land
Longer than anyone else on this earth

Our culture will never be lost
From our Creator came our birth

We have pride in our country
    In years to come
    we’ll still be strong

    We follow in the ways
    of our spirit dream
    This is where we belong

    Stories here
    Come through us

    Caretakers of our land
    Share our stories handed down
    Together hand in hand
    Culture and spirit all around

We know who has our back
    Who has yours?
    Three thousand generations
    behind us
    Teaching lore

    The spirit in the water
    Biami all around
    The mighty serpent gave us
    the great Dhungala

    Stories here
    Come through us

    Caretakers of our land
    Share our stories handed down
    Together hand in hand
    Culture and spirit all around

    Caretakers of our land
    Share our stories handed down
    Together hand in hand
